Neighborhood Initiative Success Stories
Ashland, Southern Alameda County
An unincorporated area near San Lorenzo, the Ashland community has few after-school programs. With a grant from Team-Up for Youth, the Boys and Girls Club of San Leandro and their partners were able to launch programs serving 1,000 kids with a range of sports. To accommodate girls softball, Ashland Little League has modified its schedule to share their baseball field for softball play.

The Results
- New programs serving 1,000 K-8 kids in the unincorporated Ashland community.
- Free swimming and golf through a partnership with HARD and the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.
- Great variety of sports including basketball, dance, martial arts, soccer, swimming, golf, track
- Program leaders awarded fellowships through the San Francisco Foundation to support their leadership development and Initiative received media coverage for their exceptional programs
Excelsior, San Francisco
The Excelsior district is primariliy a working class neighborhood made up of Asian and Latino immigrant families. Team-Up for Youth worked with the Mission YMCA to build a collaborative of youth sports organizations that now offer a full range of sports for kids after school, both at and near school sites.

The Results
- Excellent model of an active, committed collaborative that engages community stakeholders and organizations for facilities access
- 500 K-8 kids have sports at both school sites and in nearby parks
- Range of sports offered including basketball, hip hop dance, capoeira, frisbee, running, soccer, volleyball
Fruitvale, Oakland
The Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland has one of the highest concentrations of children living in the city and few places to play. Team-Up for Youth works with the Unity Council to bring a range of resources to help this collaborative negotiate with school sites and create safe places for kids to grow and learn through sports during the critical after-school hours and evening.

The Results
- Excellent model of how to negotiate facilities access in an area with many children who have few places to play, most notably, the Cesar Chavez Education Center--a complex of two elementary schools and a state-of-the-art turf playing field
- Cesar Chavez Education Center is open and filled to capacity from 6-9pm Monday through Friday
- Serves 500 young people with basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis and golf
Tenderloin, San Francisco
With Team-Up for Youth's support, the Bay Area Women and Children's Center (BAWCC) led the Tenderloin Youth Sports Initiative (TYSI) to launch after-school youth sports programs. With few open spaces in the Tenderloin neighborhood, BAWCC and partners worked creatively to create opportunities for kids in nearby neighborhoods connected to public transporation, including ice skating at Yerba Buena Center.
The Results
- 10 sports are offered to 600 kids who live in the Tenderloin neighborhood
- Six youth particpants in Yerba Buena ice skating program have now competed at the national level and some internationally as well
- Tenderloin Strikers youth bowling league competes year-round and basketball and flag football leagues flourish
- Program has been sustained beyond Team-Up for Youth funding
San Antonio, Oakland
The San Antonio Sports Initiative (SASI), led by the East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC) engages youth in sports. SASI and neighborhood advocates partnered with Oakland Parks and Recreation to build a new all-weather turf soccer field in San Antonio Park.
The Results
- Lead agency East Bay Asian Youth Center works with five partners
- Sports offered to 800 kids in the San Antonio neighborhood
- Provides soccer, basketball and cycling at four school sites and at San Antonio Park
- Now a core program of East Bay Asian Youth Center and has been sustained beyond Team-Up for Youth funding
